Gmail Confidential Mode: Safeguarding Your Messages in 2024

Learn how to turn on Gmail Confidential Mode to keep your sensitive emails safe.

After you send an email, it is hard to control what happens to it. People can share your email easily.

But if you have private things in your email, Google made Confidential Mode in April 2018. This stops people from sharing your email by mistake.

Some people ask if Gmail Confidential Mode is really safe. Does it hide your messages? Can Google see your emails? This guide will tell you about it.

What is Gmail Confidential Mode?

Google made Gmail Confidential Mode to protect important emails. If you are interested in learning how to encrypt email in Gmail, check out the easy guide to do this within seconds.

With confidential mode on, Gmail keeps your emails on Google’s server. People cannot share these emails.

This should stop people from giving others your private information. But it is not perfect.

Confidential Mode also lets you make your emails disappear after a while. When they disappear, nobody can see them. This is what it looks like for Gmail users.

With Gmail Confidential Mode, you can stop people from seeing your email whenever you want.

You can also ask Google to send a text with a code. The person has to use this code to look at your email.

Steps to Use Confidential Mode in Gmail

To send private emails and files, use these steps to turn on secret mode in Gmail.

Sending Secret Emails from Desktop

You can send secret emails on your computer. Do these things:

Step 1: Log in to your Gmail.

Step 2: Press “Compose” for a new email.

Step 3: Type your email, then press “Toggle confidential mode.”

Step 4: Choose when your email will expire. Gmail gives you five choices:

  • Ends in 1 day
  • Ends in 1 week
  • Ends in 1 month
  • Ends in 3 months
  • Ends in 5 years

Step 5: Now, make a passcode. If you pick “No SMS passcode,” Gmail people see the email right away. Others get a link to see the email.

Choose “SMS passcode” and give Google the phone number of your receiver. They get a text with a passcode to check who they are and see the email.

Step 6: Change your settings, then press “Save.”

Step 7: A banner shows that Gmail’s confidential mode is on. Press “Edit” to change if you need to. Press “Send” when done.

Well done! You sent a secret email. Your person will know they can not forward, print, copy, or save the email. This is how it looks to a Gmail person.

Sending Secret Emails from Mobile

To send hidden emails from your phone, here is how you turn on secret mode in the Gmail app:

Step 1: Open your Gmail app.

Step 2: Hit “Compose” for a new email.

Step 3: Make your email, then tap “More options” (three dots on the top right).

Step 4: Pick “Confidential mode” from the menu.

Step 5: Pick a date when the message will expire.

Step 6: You can ask for a code from Google for the reader to prove who they are.

Step 7: When you’ve changed the settings, press “Save” and then “Send.”

You have now sent a secure email from your phone using Gmail’s secret setting.

How to Revoke Access to a Confidential Email Before It Expires

To stop someone from reading your email before the time is up, do this:

Step 1: Open your Gmail.

Step 2: Go to the “Sent” emails.

Step 3: Find the email you sent secretly.

Step 4: Choose “Remove access.”

Now, the person cannot see your email or files any more.

Limitations of Gmail Confidential Mode

Even if people cannot share, copy, print, or save your email, they can still take a picture with their phone.

They might also use bad software to take your messages and files, like Google says.

Secret mode might make you think your emails are safe, but they are not.

The emails do not completely hide who is sending them, so others can still read them.

Also, the emails do not really go away after they expire. Gmail keeps them in your “Sent” folder. They can be reached by Google or hackers if you do not delete them by yourself after you send them.
